What is Transitional Housing?

Transitional housing refers to a supportive – yet temporary – type of accommodation that is meant to bridge the gap from homelessness to permanent housing by offering structure, supervision, support (for addictions and mental health, for instance), life skills, and in some cases, education and training.

Transitional housing is conceptualized as an intermediate step between emergency crisis shelter and permanent housing. It is more long-term, service-intensive and private than emergency shelters, yet remains time-limited to stays of three months to three years. It is meant to provide a safe, supportive environment where residents can overcome trauma, begin to address the issues that led to homelessness or kept them homeless, and begin to rebuild their support network.

What Transitional Housing Can provide

Transitional living creates and facilitates opportunities for families in poverty to collaborate, thrive, and succeed in building strong households, neighborhoods, and communities. Transitional living also assists families in reaching their housing, economic, health, education, and career goals as they overcome homelessness and break the cycle of poverty for themselves, their next generation, and beyond

Homelessness can be caused by

Family violence, Mental health issues, Physical health issue e.g. accident at work and bills mount up, Loss of employment, under-employment or inability to gain a new job ,Limited housing / rental stress
Drug and alcohol addiction (which can occur AFTER being homeless), Traumatic Experiences, or one or a combination of these factors can lead to someone becoming homeless. Sometimes homelessness can occur due to someone moving to a new area and losing their job, and not having any support to help. Other times it can be something as simple as not being able to afford housing.

Homelessness can affect anyone at any time. The tiniest life change can cause someone to lose everything they have in a blink of an eye. It's a terrible place for anyone to be in as you will never know what will happen to you on the streets.

Whatever the reason - Americans sleeping on our streets need immediate shelter to survive.
